COM (channel operating margin) is a recently adopted method of SERDES channel compliance evaluation. It provides a convenient pass/fail metric for PAM-2 and PAM-4 modulated input, is computationally efficient, includes an efficient FFE/CTLE/DFE parameter optimization strategy, and considers a number of different impairments, such as ISI, jitter, crosstalk aggressors, and Tx/Rx device noise. As signal vias pass through a cavity, coupling can occur. Unfortunately, this source of impedance is often overlooked, resulting in problems with the PDN that can be difficult to diagnose.
